How do I tell if my sump pump is about to fail?
Listen and watch. Grinding or rattling, cycling on and off every minute, running long after the rain stops, or visible rust on the housing all point to a pump near the end. Most pumps last seven to ten years, so age alone is worth checking.
Do we really need a battery backup pump in Northeast Ohio?
The storms that fill your pit are the same storms that take the power out, which is exactly when the primary pump quits. A battery backup keeps pumping through the outage. For a finished basement it is the cheapest insurance in the house.
Our pump runs nonstop even when it has not rained. Is something wrong?
Usually the pit is collecting groundwater from a high water table, or the check valve has failed and the same water keeps falling back in. Both are fixable. Constant cycling burns out a pump fast, so it is worth diagnosing early.
Where does the water from the sump pump actually go?
It goes through a discharge line to a point far enough from the house that it cannot come back, ideally to daylight on a downhill grade. We set the line below frost depth where the grade allows so it does not freeze in January. Discharging into a sanitary sewer is not allowed in Ohio.
Can you add a sump system to a basement that has never had one?
Yes. We cut a pit at the low point, set a proper liner, tie it into drainage along the footing and run the discharge out. That is standard work for us, and it is usually done in a day or two.
What size pump does our house need?
It depends on how much water reaches the pit and how high the pump has to lift it. Oversizing causes short cycling and wear, undersizing floods you. We measure the inflow during the inspection, because square footage alone does not predict it.
