How much of a wet basement is actually caused by gutters?
More than most homeowners expect. A roof sheds hundreds of gallons in one storm, and a downspout dumping at the foundation puts all of it against your wall. Extending the discharge is often the first thing we recommend because it is cheap and it works.
How far from the house should a downspout discharge?
At least six feet, and further on clay or where the ground slopes back toward the house. Underground extensions carry it further without a pipe lying across the lawn. The goal is water that cannot find its way back to the footing.
Are gutter guards worth it in Northeast Ohio?
They earn their keep under heavy tree cover, where clogged gutters overflow at the worst moment. They still need occasional attention, since fine debris gets through any screen. We will tell you honestly if your roof does not need them.

Can you tie the downspouts into a drainage system?
Yes, and that is the cleanest solution on most homes. The downspouts feed a buried line that carries roof water to the same outlet as the yard drainage. It keeps water off the foundation and off the lawn surface.
Do you install gutters as part of a waterproofing job?
